What if that is a manifestation of whether people are disengaged?

If your team does not deliver what you would like…
If your salespeople don’t close the deals you need…
If employees show up unprepared at meetings…
If employees don’t know the company mission/vision…
If your employees are quiet during meetings…

Disengagement cost a company a lot of money

  • Actively disengaged employees = 24%
  • Not engaged employees = 63%
  • Engaged employees = 13%

A great tool to get disengaged employees to engage again is feedback.

Feedback is such an interesting topic and I wish more people would understand that it starts with awareness, the ability to observe an employee in their professional habitat over a period of time from a distance.

Distance and time are needed in order to be able to observe patterns of behavior that otherwise would be overlooked. This of course also means that as a leader or manager you need time to spend with and around your employees where all you are doing is observing and taking in their behavior. How do they interact with their co-workers? What are subtle signs of frustration, celebration, bullying or kindness?

When we think of feedback we think of stern talks and serious faces in meetings that go on too long. I wish for the world that we would understand that feedback can be a common exercise done on a daily basis that is not about checking whether someone is doing the right or good job but rather do they have what they need in order to thrive?

Once we as leaders start observing our employees on a daily basis we can see them for who they truly are. When observed from closeby and afar over time it is harder for employees to keep up appearances thus making it easier for a leader to authentically connect.

Then, there are only three things left to do:

  1. Make assumptions based on your observation of behavior over time.
  2. Test if the assumption is correct.
  3. Course correct and lead the employee with your new found knowledge.

This way feedback does not even need to feel like feedback because it becomes part of normal daily conversation. This… is true psychological safety.
